PUNTA MITA MEXICO TRAVEL VLOG: AN EAT, STAY, PLAY GUIDE

Punta De Mita - Things to do in Punta Mita Mexico - Places to stay in Punta Mita, Vacation home rentals

My girlfriend Joja joined me on my trip to Punta Mita as my ‘babymoon’ companion! What a great friend!

A Punta Mita, Nayarit Eat, Stay, Play Travel Guide

It may not have been the babymoon I had pictured but my recent trip to Punta Mita, Mexico ended up just being just what I needed.

If you are new to my Youtube channel or blog, my husband Adam and I have been slowly renovation our Toronto Victorian home for the past 18 months and after a year of renovations we finally moved back into our house this past May, got married in Italy this September and found out I was pregnant the same week we got back from our honeymoon in Croatia. This past year has been nothing if not momentous and knowing the next phase of our renovation was just on the horizon, I knew if I didn’t go visit my parents at their new condo in Punta Mita now, I probably wouldn’t get another opportunity for at least 10 months. So off I went!

Unfortunately for me, the timing did not work for my husband who was swamped at work so instead of being the babymoon I had pictured, I invited a friend to join me as my pregnancy companion to enjoy some warm weather and sunshine while I can.

It had been a quite some time since my last trip to Punta Mita 9 years ago and so much had changed. Previously, Adam and I had gone there with my parents and stayed at a family friends’ place but this time around, my girlfriend and I would be staying at their newly built condo and could visit the new Punta Mita beach clubs that had opened since and dine at all the best restaurants.

If you have never been to Punta Mita Mexico before, it’s a luxurious 1,500-acre private residential community located on a spear-shaped peninsula that features two luxury hotel properties (the Four Seasons Punta Mita and St. Regis Punta Mita) and numerous world-class amenities including two Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses.

Where is Punta Mita?

Situated 45 km (28 miles) from Puerto Vallarta International Airport, it takes about 45-50 minutes to get to Punta Mita by car, but once there you are surrounded on three sides by nine and a half miles of beaches. Outside the gates of Punta Mita you will find Punta de Mita, a small artisan, merchant and fishing village with restaurants, stores, markets and cafes to explore. Access into Punta Mita is only available to guests staying at the hotel or property owners and their invited guests making it a very private and exclusive destination that attracts celebrities and international elite visitors alike.

Things to Do in Punta Mita Mexico - Punta De Mita - Best restaurants in Punta mita - Asai Japanese restaurant at Kupuri beach club - punta mita beach clubs

Kupuri Beach Club! One of four beach clubs in Punta Mita that are open to residents and vacation property renters.

Things To Do in Punta Mita

Relax at the numerous Punta Mita Beach clubs - As a resident or vacation property renter you gain access to the numbers Punta Mita beach clubs including Kupuri beach club which features the Navi Spa and Coritas Kids Club (an air conditioned clubhouse that accommodates toddlers to teenagers with a roster of activities including wading pools and video games), Sufi Ocean Club, Sea Breeze Beach Club, and Pacifico Beach club. Each beach club features their own array of ocean sport activities, a variety of swimming pools as well as culinary offerings.

Get Active - There are so many ways to stay active in Punta Mita. With close to 6.5 km (4 miles) of recreation trails to the Tennis and Fitness Centre, and water sports (paddle boarding, boogie boarding, sailing, wind sports and snorkelling equipment are all available for rent or can be paired with lessons), there are so many ways to stay active. Of course, for those interested in golf, The Four Seasons Golf Course features two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses that offer views of the Sierra Madre Mountains, Bahía de Banderas and the Pacific. It also features the world renowned “Tail of the Whale” – the world’s only natural island green (can only be played at low tide). Adam and I played the course 9 years ago when we were last in Punta Mita and although Adam is a much more of an experienced golfer, it is a beautiful course that is well worth planning ahead for.

Blend your own Tequila! - Had I been able to drink or had Adam been with me, I would have done this experience in a heartbeat!. Offered through the Four Seasons, you can pay to participate in a two hour guided tasting where you explore different versions of tequila and then blend a unique tequila that reflects your own tastes and preferences. My mom did this experience and vouched for how great it was not to mention makes a great souvenir to take home at the end of your trip!

Go Shopping - There isn’t much shopping to do in Punta Mita itself (unless you need a new golf shirt in which case head to the club house) but as soon as you leave the gates and cross the street into Punta De Mita you will find numerous little boutiques to explore. Two of my favourite included a home decor store called Un Pueblo, and a clothing/accessory store called Belem del Mar where I found the cutest pair of father - son matching bathing suits I had to buy for Adam and his soon-to-be mini.

Spend the day at the spa - As a resident or vacation property renter, not only do you have access to the Navi Spa at Kupuri Beach Club but you can also access the spa at both the Four Seasons Punta Mita and the St. Regis Punta Mita, which leaves only one question, which do you try first?

Book a medical treatment - Not something you may typically think about when planning a vacation but worth keeping in mind is that Punta Mita does have an outstanding private hospital with spectacular medical team that uses state-of-the-art technology. Looking for a quick MRI, suffer from a heart condition, or want to talk to someone about infertility treatments, Punta Mita Hospital offers an array of services and specialties to help you. Not to mention, Punta Mita makes for an ideal destination to relax by the sea while going through recovery.

Punta De Mita - Things to do in Punta Mita Mexico - best restaurants in punta mita - la pescadora

My girlfriend Joja picked the best table for dinner at Pescadora in Punta de Mita. I mean, just look at that ocean front view!

Best Restaurants in Punta Mita

Asai Japanese - If you love Japanese food you have to visit Kupuri Beach Club’s Japanese restaurant serving delicious Asian Cuisine By Chef Yasuo! Using a mix of traditional methods and flavors with creative innovations you can choose from all the traditional sushi dishes you love like rolls, sushi, nigiri, dim sum, noodle soups, and bowls while also indulging in new creations featuring a clear influence steaming from Mexican cuisine. Seafood doesn’t get any fresher when in Mexico so why not indulge in some delicious Japanese food while there. Just be sure to save room for dessert because the ‘crispy ice cream sandwich with roasted hazelnuts, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate ganache was also out of this world.

Restaurant Sufi - Located inside Sufi Ocean Club, Restaurant Sufi combines the flavors of Mexico and the Mediterranean to create a cuisine dubbed “Mexiterranean." This was one of the first places we ate at for lunch while in Punta Mita and not only are the ocean front views amazing but so is the food! Definitelyy one of the best restaurants in Punta Mita to enjoy lunch if you ask me!

Majagua Pop Up at St Regis - Serving delicious Mexican favourites like tacos, ceviche and cochinita, The St. Regis pop up restaurant on the beach is definitely worth a visit while it lasts. We ended up going here twice actually because not only do they have a great selection of tacos (something I seem to always be craving while pregnant) but their menu featured this Zucchini in green sauce with cojita cheese that was just out of this world! I need to figure out how to make it because it looked so easy and was just that good.

Punta Mita Nayarit Mexico - Best restaurants in Punta Mita - Tuna Blanca Punta Mita

Highly recommend grabbing a seat on the beachfront patio at Tuna Blanca in Punta De Mita. We got to enjoy the most spectacular sunset during our meal!

Tuna Blanca by Thierry Blouet - An upscale (well as upscale as it gets in Punta De Mita) seafood restaurant with a large air-conditioned indoor dining room as well as a beachfront patio for those who like to enjoy their meals al fresco. We started off our meal at Tuna Blanca with a table side prepared Caesar salad, followed by roasted artichokes, tuna tostada, and ended with a plate of steamed mussels in a white wine and creme sauce! Yum!

ParrotFish Punta Mita - This Asian/Latin fusion restaurant is also located in the town of Punta De Mita and uses locally sourced high quality ingredients in all their dishes. My parents visit this restaurant weekly and absolutely love their shrimp tempura as well as their creative sushi rolls and “A La Piedra” Tuna slices marinated in a citrus ponzu. This is probably the best restaurant in Punta de Mita for dinner if you want to try something outside the luxury hotels.

Punta De Mita - Things to do in Punta Mita Mexico - best restaurants in punta mita - la pescadora

The roasted beet salad from La Pescadora in Punta de Mita

La Pescadora - This open-air barbecue and seafood restaurant located right on the beach in Punta de Mita offers great sunset views set in a causal atmosphere. We had dinner here on one of our first nights in Punta Mita and it was an obvious hangout for people looking to watch the game under a large Palapa while drinking margaritas. Honourable menu mentions include the shrimp fettuccine, roasted beet salad, and their catch of the day grilled and sautéed in lemons juice, capers, and a touch of butter.

Punta Mita Mexico - Babymoon in Mexico - Babymoon places - vacation outfit ideas for pregnancy

Bump Style! Vacation pregnancy outfits I wore in Punta Mita. Love showing off my growing bump!

Casa Teresa Punta Mita - Who would have thought you could find a traditional Italian style Trattoria in the middle of Mexico?? Not I! But here we are! The menu at Casa Teresa features many traditional Italian dishes including numerous pasta dishes. Highlights of this menu include the Buratta and roasted beet appetizer, the Caprese with roasted Gala Apple Salad, and the Italian Lemon Octopus. I also loved the chocolate brownie they offered for dessert and my girlfriend said her Carbonara was delicious.

Boca Deli - A little cafe and coffee shop in Punta de Mita that serves sandwiches, salads, smoothies, Boca Deli is a fun little place to visit for breakfast or lunch. My girlfriend and I grabbed some ice coffees here while wandering around the shops of Punta de Mita after lunch and found it to be a cute little spot right beside the food and vegetable market that was worth even a short visit.

While in Mexico, my mom’s housekeeper/cook also taught me how to make authentic Baja fish tacos using the Mahi Mahi fish and shrimp we got at the market in La Cruz. If you are interested in the recipe, check out my Baja Fish Taco Recipe blog post! Here’s a little preview below!

Sayulita Nayarit - Sayulita Mexico- Things to do in Sayulita Mexico - Sayulita Puerto Vallarta - Sayulita shopping

One of my favourite things to do is go shopping in Sayulita as there are so many cool boutiques to check out!

Quick Road Trip And Places To Explore Around Punta Mita

Sayulita, Nayarit and San Francisco (aka San Pancho) - Located about 30 minutes up the coast from Punta Mita you will discover two fun and vibrant Mexican towns with their own unique charm and appeal. Sayulita, Mexico is full of expats and locals alike and features numerous cafes, restaurants, hotels hostels and bars to hang out at along with a busy beach where you can swim and admire the surfers. San Francisco on the other hand is much quieter than Sayulita with less booming music, but still offers the same charm you would expect from a small Mexican town. We spent a day in Sayulita and San Francisco during this recent trip to Punta Mita and my girlfriend loved it. For those travelling alone or those interested in more of a party scene, Sayulita would definitely be your vibe where as if you wanted something more authentic and relaxed, San Pancho is for you as the streets and beach are noticeably less busy.

La Cruz de Huanacaxtle - Another great place to explore if you are staying in Punta Mita long term is La Cruz. Located 30 minutes down the coast towards Puerto Vallarta is a small, developing Mexican fishing village with a large marina and of course a fish market (Mercado del Mar). You don’t need more than a morning to explore the whole town but there is definitely a few restaurants worth trying, a small knick·knack market to explore, and of course a large beach. Deep sea fishing is one of the main water activities of La Cruz, thanks to the abundance of fish species such as tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi, so if you are interested in a chartered day trips you will find plenty of businesses offering just that out of the marina in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. My mom and I did a little road trip to La Cruz to have lunch with her friends and purchase fresh fish from the local fisherman for that night’s dinner and even though I was there for only a short amount of time, I found it to be quiet charming. My mom also told me that on Sundays they have a great market set up on the pier with around 170 vendors to explore.

CROATIA TRAVEL VLOG: OUR HONEYMOON IN CROATIA

Adam and I on our 10 day honeymoon in Croatia

* Please Note - Although this post is not sponsored, some links may be affiliate links *

Our Croatia Honeymoon

Croatia was never the original plan. When Adam and I first started planning our wedding in Italy and talking about where we could go for our honeymoon right after, Sardinia was the target destination. After a little bit of research though, we realized mid to late September was not the ideal time of year to go to Sardinia so instead we pivoted to Croatia. And what a great pivot it was!

By the time we made the switch though, we were only a month away from our wedding and since I was seriously deep in the trenches of planning our wedding, I left it in Adam’s court to plan our Croatia travel itinerary. We had 10 days to enjoy and explore as much of Croatia as possible, and other than me requesting a few days to just chill and recharge directly following the wedding, our main goals were to experience some Croatia sailing, visit Dubrovnik and eat as much delicious traditional Croatian cuisine as we could.

Our 10 Day Croatia Itinerary

Following our wedding in Italy Adam and I were mentally and physically exhausted. Not only had we organized three days of wedding celebrations in Tuscany, but we met up with friends for a whirlwind weekend in Florence beforehand. We were desperate for a recharge. Adam’s itinerary had us flying from Rome to Split before catching a ferry to Hvar where we would be staying for the first 3 days and 3 nights of our Croatia honeymoon.

Along the edge of Vinogradišće bay is where you will find Zori Timeless Hotel and Restaurant Hvar

Our Luxury Boutique Hotel in Hvar

Our first accommodation in Croatia would be a boutique hotel in Hvar called Zori Timeless Hotel and Restaurant. A 5-star accommodation in Hvar, Zori is a beachfront property with 4 residences/villas, each with their own outdoor swimming pool. Each of the residences come with all the luxury fixings you would imagine with a 5 start property including air-conditioning, large wardrobes, a coffee machine, a fridge, a minibar, a safety deposit box, a flat-screen TV, a terrace and a private bathroom with a shower. In additional to great room amenities the hotel also has a small fitness centre but more importantly features one of the best restaurants in Hvar! Palmizana Beach as well as Laganini beach club (one of the best beach clubs in Hvar during the summer season) can also be found a stones throw away.

The ‘Cloud Residence” at Zori Timeless Hotel and Restaurant is a one bedroom suite with a large terrace and rooftop Jacuzzi pool

While at Zori, Adam had booked for us to stay in the ‘Cloud Residence’ which featured a one bedroom suite with two swimming pools and a wide-open terrace overlooking Vinogradišće bay. Our beautiful rooftop pool with Jacuzzi provided stunning views of the bay and became our favourite spot to chill, drink and relax. Adam had also organized a half board stay with our accommodations which meant that not only was breakfast and dinner included with our room but so was all the non alcoholic beverages in our room and at the restaurant. The room itself was beautiful, spacious and modern. The atmosphere was so relaxing and just what we needed to recharge our batteries. Upon check in, we found a beautiful bottle of Chandon and some freshly baked cookies in our room, a gift from the hotel to help us kick off our honeymoon. A great touch if you ask me!

Over the course of three days Adam and I feasted at Zori Retaurant. Known for being one of the best restaurants in Hvar, the restaurant itself is a destination. It wasn’t uncommon for small boats of people to arrive just to dine there for dinner and no wonder, the food was fantastic! The best we had on the island in fact! The menu was full of delicious fresh seafood and creative interpretations to otherwise classic dishes and there was always a cocktail that paired perfectly with whatever you were craving.

Breakfast is served! The food at restaurant Zori is so good!

During our stay at Zori, we had a member of staff (Mr. Martin) looking after us exclusively. He would organize activities for us, recommend us dishes based on our like and preferences, and made sure we were have the best stay possible. No little detail was overlooked and Mr. Martin made sure we never left a meal hungry or wanting for anything. He also made notes of what we enjoyed the most (like a whole grilled fish for me at dinner) so he could make sure the kitchen always had one available for me.

The next day Adam and I got up early, had a full breakfast before heading out for a casual hike. Mr. Martin had told us about a rugged walking path that takes you into several bays from which you can swim or admire the view.

Adam and I on our hike

Desperately in need of a some exercise after weeks of excessive drinking and eating, Adam and I packed a bag and headed out on a little adventure. In reality the hike was more of an hour and a half trail walk. It did take us to some pretty amazing bays with the most beautiful aquamarine waters though where we could dive in and enjoy a swim (just watch out for the sea urchins)!

Laganini beach club (one of the best beach clubs in Hvar) and Palmizana Beach are so close to the hotel, you can see it from the terrace of our one bedroom suite at Zori Timeless Hotel

Feeling pretty good after getting in some exercise Adam and I headed to Palazana beach beside the hotel with a pitcher of Carona’s tucked under our arm to enjoy a swim and spend the rest of the afternoon baking under the Croatian sun.

On our third and last full day at Zori, Adam and I were determined to soak up all the luxury. From here on out, we would be ‘roughing it’ in comparison to the lavishness we experienced at Zori, so we made sure to make the most of our last day. Mr Martin had helped us to arrange an in room massage so after breakfast, Adam and I went out for a quick walk in the opposite direction of where we hiked yesterday to check out Palmazana Marina, before returning to our room for our 90 minute massages.

Sad to leave but looking forward to our upcoming sailing adventure, Adam and I headed to Hvar to catch our ferry to Dubrovnik. Since we didn’t have time for breakfast, Mr Martin actually packed us some sandwiches to take on the ferry! Such a thoughtful sendoff!

Upon arriving in Dubrovnik, we went straight to the docks to board the catamaran we would be sailing on for the next couple days.

Croatia Sailing holiday - croatia honeymoon - catamaran in croatia exploration holiday

While planning our honeymoon in Croiatia, Adam found a Croatia Sailing Charter company that offered individual cabin rentals (as oppose to entire boats) and a variety of tours ranging in length, departure destinations and excursion offerings. Adam had booked a 4 day Croatia sailing holiday for us which would take us to varies elephiti islands and towns including Sipan, Polace on Mljet island, and Broce and Ston in the Peljesac Peninsula. During our 4 day sailing itinerary we would have opportunities to swim, stand up paddle board, snorkel, cycle and go hiking. In the evenings we would be docking in small towns where we had the convenience of buying snacks and drinks from the market for the next days sailing.

Sailing to Sipanska Luka, Sipan

Once settled into our nice and clean cabin, we headed to the upper decks and got aquatinted with the crew and other guests. Unfortunately there wasn’t much wind so we couldn’t do any sailing but we did make a pit stop for a swim in a little cove on the way to our first island.

That evening we would be docking in Sipan, a small inhabited island 17km north west of Dubrovnik. The crew had arranged a reservation for dinner for all of the guest which made settling in for the evening quite effortless.

Sailing to Polace Village on Mljet Island

On day two of our Croatia sailing holiday we departed Sipan early and heading towards Mljet Island. In no rush, we ended up stopped in Prožurska Luka (a small bay and village on the northern shores of Mljet island) to swim, paddle board and explore the surrounding before continuing on. After about an hour of motoring, we finally arrived at our destination, Polace village on Mljet island. Not only would we be docking here overnight but our skipper and guide had organized an e-bike excursion for us to explore Mljet’s National Park on the northwest part of the island.

Mljet National Park is a large park that surrounds two saltwater lakes – Veliko (the larger late) and Malo Jezero (the smaller lake). The lakes stretch 4 kilometers and there is a great biking/walking path around them that you can cycle on. While cycling, as you look out into the middle of the lake you will also see a small island, Melita (Sveta Marija) with a large building (formally a Benedictine monastery erected in the 12th century). Today, a café/restaurant occupy the building and visitors to the national park can jump on a boat (included with your 15 Euro entrance fee) to pay it a visit.

Dinner that night was at another restaurant arranged by our skipper, called Konoba Antika. The food was phenomenal, plentiful, and typical of traditional Croatian dishes. Adam and I ordered the squid ink risotto and their signature octopus dish, cooked in a covered ban under hot coals with veggies! It was so good!

NOTE* Konoba Antika does not take credit cards so bring cash!

Sailing to Sipanska Luka, Sipan

Croatia Sailing holiday - croatia honeymoon - catamaran in croatia exploration holiday

Finally, on our last full day on the catamaran, we had some strong enough winds to put up the sails! Originally the plan was to head to Peljesac peninsula for some fresh oysters but given there was a big storm heading our way, our captain decided it head back to Sipan to dock and take refuge.

Croatia Sailing holiday - Sipan croatia - beach bar - exploration holiday

Between rainstorms Adam and I did manage to go on a short hike in which brought us to a beautiful olive tree grove above the town of Sipanska Luka. Sweaty from both the exercise and humidity we headed to the beach bar for a quick swim before another huge storm rolled in for the night.

Sailing to Lopud Island and Dubrovnik

The next day we departed Sipan early and headed to Lopud, the last stop in our catamaran sailing adventure.

Lopud Island Restaurants

Since we only had an hour and a half to check out the island, Adam and I walked the main esplanade before settling down for a bite at Obala. This family owned waterfront restaurant offers stunning views of the bay and delicious traditional Croatian dishes. I think they knew we were coming because the first thing they did once we sat down was show us a platter of fresh fish. Even though they didn’t have my favourite Scorpion fish, they did have a large Turbot which Adam and I had heard of and had been meaning to try. The food here was delicious and Adam said it was his favourite meal next of this whole sailing portion of our trip, next to Konoba Antika.

Next Stop: Dubrovnik!

Accommodations in Dubrovnik

Adam and I were so excited to explore the old town in Dubrovnik. We were both really into the Game of Thrones series when it was on TV so we were excited to see what ‘kings landing’ in real life was like. Our accommodations in Dubrovnik was actually a short term apartment rental above the old town of Dubrovnik. The owner greeted us at the door and helped us with our bags. He gave us fresh towels, a map and a couple welcome beer to enjoy on the patio. The view from our apartment is what sold us. It was maybe an 8 minute walk into old town but it was perched so high on the hill that it offered spectacular views of the old town.

Eager to experience the old town of Dubrovnik, Adam and I quickly showered, got ready and made our way down towards the town. On the path that led down to the town from our Airbnb we came across so many ornate, beautiful doors! I loved all the different designs and entrance ways and I had to stop and take a few pictures of my favourites. Once in old town we quickly learned that Old Town Dubrovnik is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world! Even at night the old town is packed with people and finding a good restaurant to eat at without a reservation or massive line was difficult.

Restaurants in Old Town Dubrovnik

After a few failed attempts, we eventually settled in at a small sushi restaurant called Mediteraneo Sushi and Seafood, before grabbing some ice cream at Aroma and calling it a night.

honeymoon to croatia - croatia itinerary - dubrovnik croatia - old town Dubrovnik croatia

The next day Adam and I got up early and made our way back to old town as things just started to open. Hoping to beat the tour buses and swathes of people that came with them, Adam and I spent a good part of the morning walking the wall around the whole town where you got to experience spectacular views of the walled city.

Walking the walls of Dubrovnik is one of the most popular tourist activities you can do while in Croatia. The wall is visited by more than 1.2 million visitors a year and spans nearly 2 kilometers around the town which took us close to an hour and a half to walk. There is an admission fee to walk the walls of Dubrovnik which cost 35 Euro per adult in peak season (March to October) and can be purchased at the entrance of the wall.

After walking the wall Adam and I were feeling hungry. We had plans to go to this specific restaurant for lunch but since it wasn’t open yet we snacked on Burek from Milnar and fruit from a local market* we found while wondering around old town.

*I later found out that Gundulić Square Market operates six days a week starting at 7 am, selling all kinds of fruits and vegetables, souvenirs, liqueurs, flowers and cheese.

honeymoon to croatia - croatia itinerary - dubrovnik croatia - old town Dubrovnik croatia - restaurants in old town dubrovnik - lady pipi dubrovnik

Lady Pipi in Old Town Dubrovnik, Croatia does not take reservations

Finally it was time for lunch! Adam and I headed up to the top of the walled city to Lady Pipi’s for some grilled fish and meats. We had tried to go here the night before but the line was too big and we knew we wouldn’t make it in before it closed. Instead of risking the line we decided to come back for lunch instead and beat the line by showing up 10 minutes before they open.

The food at Lady Pipi’s ended up being really good and actually fairly priced for ‘old town’ standards. It easily turned out to be one of our best meals while in Dubrovnik consisting of primarily grilled meats and seafood.

After lunch Adam and I headed to Buza Bar for a drink! Located not the side of a cliff and only accessible through a hole in the wall, Buza bar is a great spot to escape the crowds and enjoy views of the Adriatic. Adam and I stayed here for a couple hours talking over cocktails and a bottle of wine while occasionally stopping to people watch.

After a couple hours, another big storm began rolling in so Adam and I took the opportunity to head back the Airbnb for a quick refresh before dinner at Dalmatino Dubrovnik.

A Quick Trip to Lokrum Island

All things must eventually come to an end but before we headed to the airport, there was still one last thing Adam and I wanted to do, visit Lokrum Island.

honeymoon to croatia - croatia itinerary - dubrovnik croatia - lokrum croatia - lokrum ferry

Adam and I on the ferry to Lokrum Island

A quick 15-20 minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik’s old town harbour, Lokrum is home to a Benedictine monastery where you will find and can take picture with the famous Iron Throne, a sprawling botanical garden, and secluded salt lake. It is also home to about a bajillion peacocks which roam the island freely. Adam and I spent a few hours exploring the island, walking around and taking pictures. If we had more time we likely would have sat down at one of the cafe/restaurants on the island for a drink or went for a swim in the secluded salt late.

Note: The price of the round trip ferry ride plus entrance into the ‘Nature Reserve of Lokrum’ costs 27 Euro

Thank you so much for joining Adam and I on our honeymoon to Croatia. If you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comment section below, otherwise don’t forget to subscribe as I’ll be back with more travel content soon. Ciao for now!

ITALY TRAVEL VLOG: OUR WEDDING IN TUSCANY!

Our Wedding In Italy!

This past September my fiancé Adam and I finally tied the knot in Italy. After 11 years together, we exchanged rings in one of the most romantic settings in the world surrounded by friends and family. All the hard work and wedding planning my mom and I put into creating the perfect destination wedding finally paid off and the look of wonderment and delight on everyone’s faces (especially Adam’s) made it totally worth the while.

One of Adam and I’s favourite part of the entire experience was relishing in such a magical setting alongside our friends and family. It not only prolonged the celebrations (which otherwise felt like they flew by) but made the payoff and memories 10x more abundant. To this day, our guests are still sending us photos from their time in Italy and remarking on how amazing their experiences were. We never tire of hearing stories from everyone's perspective and enjoy remembering all the funny and heartfelt moments that made the wedding such a special occasion.

I also feel so lucky to live in a time where everyone has cameras on their phones so we can document each moment and capture memories to reflect on later. Even though the ‘lead up’, ‘day of’ and ‘post wedding’ celebrations lasted nearly a week, it still felt like it went by in a blink of an eye and making these travel vlogs have actually helped me delight in each moment all over again. I feel that as a bride it’s hard to be present on your big day and you become so over stimulated with the activities, tasks, and conversations that it’s hard to remember all the little details. I feel so lucky to have these memories captured on video so I can look back on them for years to come. I really hope you enjoy my wedding travel vlogs (it was too long to make into one video so I had to split it up into two parts) and get inspired to plan a trip (or wedding) to Italy. We really had such a blast, loved our accommodations and ate at some amazing restaurants so feel free to take notes and follow in our footsteps next time you find yourself in Italy!

Florence Accommodations

Finding reasonably priced accommodations in Florence can be quite challenging and coupled with the fact that we were going to Croatia for our honeymoon right after the wedding, we wanted to save our luxury experiences for then. Enter, Your Place In Florence’s Palazzo San Niccolo, an apartment style hotel located in what once was a 13th century monastery. Today the hotel boasts a contemporary design with a retro spirit and features a beautiful courtyard garden which makes for the perfect refuge from the bustle of a busy, high-tourist city like Florence. Perfectly situated in one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Florence, Oltraro, you are surrounded by artisan workshops, wine bars and charming cafes, while only being 5 minutes from Piazza Michelangelo and 8 minutes from Ponte Vecchio. Our room ended up costing us around $440 CAD a night (in September) which we thought was great value given it had a little kitchenette/dining space and living room area. The hotel also has laundry machines you can use (which could come in handy if you’re in-between destinations) as well as offers laundry service so you get those customized upgrades should you wish. Complimentary sparkling and filtered natural water fountains can be found in the basement as well and rooms come with free wifi, air conditioning, iron and ironing boards, hairdryers etc. If you need anything additional like grocery delivery, a private driver, or a place to park your car, the front desk can arrange it for you as well as cooking classes, private tours and luggage storage. Lastly, in addition to the communal courtyard they also have a lounge where breakfast and coffee is offered in the morning.

Adam and I especially loved how the communal courtyard in our Florence accommodations allowed us to friends and invite family to join us for a drink and nibbles before our planned Sunday dinner. We had asked for permission from the concierge beforehand and given we had another group of friends staying at the same accommodations I think it helped persuade them to allow it. We of course were mindful of our noise level and left just after sunset to ensure we didn’t disturb other guests . We also made sure to clean up after ourselves. Definitely another great reason why it’s one of the best places to stay in Florence Italy.

Restaurants in Florence Italy

Knowing we would only be in Florence for two nights, we made sure to make reservations at some of the best restaurants!

Known for having the best pasta in Florence Osteria Pastella was one of those restaurants I had been dying to try for awhile. Their flambé tagliatelle truffle pasta made table side in a large Grana Padano wheel and finished off with freshly saved black truffle first caught my eye while perusing on IG and let me tell you, this experience was even better and more delicious than I could have imagined! I absolutely loved our meal here and the casual atmosphere of the restaurant. It definitely won’t be Adam and I’s last visit!

The Favaloso (Sbriciolona salami, cream of pecorino cheese, cream of artichokes and spicy eggplants) from All’ Antico Vinaio in Florence Italy!

Crowned as ‘the best sandwich shop in Florence’ by my (then) fiancé, All’Antico Vinaio is one spot we always visit every time we are in Florence and it never disappoints. There is always a line but it goes fast and since the first time we came here in 2017 they have now expanded to four storefronts within 50 feet of the original, which just attests to how awesome they are! We like to order the FAVOLOSA (Sbriciolona salami, cream of pecorino cheese, cream of artichokes and spicy eggplants) when we go and always add a spicy chilli spread for a little extra spice.

Our pre-wedding group dinner at La Giostra Firenze! What a turn out!

For our group dinner on the Sunday Adam and I made a reservation two months in advance at our favourite restaurant in Florence, La Giostra. A hot spot for celebrities this restaurant features traditional Tuscan style cooking and has one of the best steak Florentine’s in the city! Our group dinner here was a total success and had everyone feasting on seafood, steak and delicious pasta dishes. As expected, it was a total crowd pleaser.

Our Visit to the Designer Outlet Mall in Florence

If you love designer clothes and are okay with purchasing last seasons overstock you have to check out ‘The Mall Firenze’, Florence’s luxury outlet mall. Located about 30 minutes outside Florence off the highway, Adam and I stopped in at The Mall on our way to our wedding villa to see if we could score any cool finds. From Prada to Fendi, Gucci, Bottega, Balenciaga and more, The Mall is a large promenade style shopping centre (meaning its outdoors so you may want to go on a nice day) with over 35 designer stores to explore. Even though no purchases were made this time, it was still a lot of fun to peruse the stores and discounts.

After our visit at the designer outlet mall in Florence we headed to Monticiano where we stayed at aunt Linda’s rented farmhouse for one night before we could check into our Tuscan wedding villa. We spent the rest of the day relaxing poolside with Adam’s west coast cousins, drinking and laughing well into the evening.

The following day Adam and I got up early and headed to the the municipality office in Chiusdino to meet with our legal paperwork coordinator. Introduced to us through our wedding planner, our wedding paperwork coordinator Antonella had been such a great help guiding us through the documentation requirements we needed to obtain our marriage license in Italy. Since she is fluent in English and Italian, she became such a great asset to Adam and I as we planned our wedding in Italy and really helped us though the legal process of getting married in Italy. Now, having all the paperwork in order, there were still a few documents we needed to sign and submit to the local municipality before our big day.

Our Wedding Venue - Abbazia Di San Galgano

After a quick visit to the municipality office, Adam and I picked up our wedding photographer Arash Moallemi and headed to Abbazia Di San Galgano, our wedding ceremony venue, for a site visit. I had been to the abbey before in April with my mom during our planning trip, but this was Adam’s first time and I think he was pretty blown away by how beautiful it was in person.

Located in the Tuscan countryside of Italy, San Galgano Abbey is one of the most unique and breathtaking destinations in Tuscany. Built in the 13th century, the abbey is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and is regarded as one of the most important church ruins in Italy. The abbey's remote location adds to its otherworldly beauty, making it a popular destination for both national and international visitors. While the San Galgano Abbey is not currently used for religious services it is one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Italy and features an open air cathedral!

Fun facts about Abbazia San Galgano & the legend of the Sword in the Stone:

The abbey's most iconic feature is the sword in the stone. Legend has it that the man who was later to become San Galgano was a knight who thrusted his sword into a rock and declared that he would give up his life as a soldier to serve God. The sword still stands in the chapel, serving as a potent symbol of San Galgano's legendary story and the power of faith.

Once we wrapped up at the abbey it was time for us to check into our wedding villa.

Villa Podernovo - wedding villas in italy - our wedding venue in tuscany

Villa Podernovo an 18th century Tuscany holiday villa we rented for the wedding

Our Tuscany Wedding Villa

Villa Podernovo is an 18th century Tuscany holiday villa located just outside the town of Monticiano, 45 minutes from Siena. It is here where we would be hosting our welcome dinner, wedding reception and post wedding brunch, and where we and our immediate family would be staying for the next three days.

Only 8km from Abbazia Di San Galgano, Villa Podernovo features sprawling lawns, courtyards, and even a pool. The villa itself features 5 apartments with a total of 9 spacious bedrooms (many with en suite bathrooms) that can sleep about 18 adults. Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen, a stunning living room with a fireplace, and comes with access to a beautiful outdoor terrace where you can soak up the Tuscan sun and enjoy an al fresco meal with friends and family.

By the time we arrived our wedding planner Diana (who also owns Villa Podernovo) was setting up and getting things ready for our first event, the Welcome Pizza Party!

Our Italian Wedding Planner!

Diana Grandi, has been organizing weddings at the villa for several years and offers her wedding planner and coordination services to guests who rent the entire villa for their wedding. Over the past few months leading up to the wedding she had become such a great asset, providing me with a list of vendors she recommended and helping us organize all our wedding events, decorations, transportation to the Abbey, layouts for the reception, and coordinating our wholesale liquor deliveries. Hiring a wedding planner in Italy was one of the best decisions my mom and I made during the planning process and I can’t imagine what it would be like to do it all without her now.

Our welcome pizza party was incredible. Diana organized all the decorations and brought in a master pizza chef and additional staff to make sure everything went off without a hitch. The only thing we were in charge of (by choice as we could have paid to bring in a bar service) was putting out the wine and beer and mixing cocktails. In the end it was a great way to kick off the celebrations and get everyone mingling.

Too excited to sleep, I got up early and went down to breakfast. Diana and her staff had already began to set up a large buffet table full or cold cuts, cheese, juices, cereals & muesli and homemade cakes, and soon everyone in the villa trickled in for coffee and breakfast before wedding preparations began.

Getting ready for my wedding at San Galgano Abbey and Villa Podernovo

The girls and I got ready in a private room in the day time villa while Adam and his groomsman got ready in the night time villa. Each group had a few bottles of cold Prosecco waiting for us to enjoy as we got ready. I had chosen to do my own makeup and my lovely little sister (who had been practising with me over the last two months) did my Hollywood waves! She did such a great job!

Tuscany Wedding Florist

Mid wedding prep we got the most wonderful delivery from our Italian wedding florists Marta and Patrizia.

Highly recommended by Diana, the Italian wedding florists did a wonderful job encapsulating my vision and bringing it to life. I love the pastel colours of a sunset and the flower arrangements, bouquets, boutonnières and the flower crowns they made for the flower girls mimicked just that. Even after the ceremony they brought the flowers back from the abbey and rearranged them to use during the cocktail reception and sit down dinner which was amazing and totally added additional beauty to the ambience of both events.

Our Italian Wedding Caterers

During this time our catering company Roland Social and Business Catering was also setting up. Although their lack of communication leading up to the big day was very nerve wracking, I have to say their execution on the day of was outstanding. They came early and started setting up all the tables for both the cocktail reception and the sit down dinner. They brought lots of wait staff with them and their event manager ran his team with military precision. The tablescapes complimented the florals perfectly and the mise en place presentation was impeccable.

Adam and I got married at a 13th Century Gothic, roofless abbey in Tuscany, Italy called Abbazia Di San Galgano

Once ready the girls and I headed to the abbey for the ceremony. Adams cousin Nashlyn and her husband Louise are both musicians so they played the most beautiful acoustic rendition of ‘Is This Love’ for my entrance. My mom who had been by my side for this entire planning process honoured me by walking me down the aisle to Adam’s side. The mayor of the municipality was the officiant of the ceremony while Diana, our Italy wedding planner, translated.

Following the ceremony everyone headed back to the villa for the cocktail reception. Rolands had set up multiple tables around the oak tree and upper courtyard where guests could help themselves to cheese bouvettes, fresh cold cuts, and finger food like bruschetta, beef tartare with quail egg and truffle; wafer cone with burrata cheese and candied tomato. The waiters handed out warm finger foods of mini eggplants Parmigiana millefeuille; medallion of cornmeal with burrata cheese and caramelized onion; while the bartenders mixed our signature drink, a Cocktail Hugo made of elderflower syrup, Prosecco, mint and lime.

Photos from our Cocktail Reception

After about an hour and a half, our guests were encouraged to make their way up to the dinner reception and find their seat. Adam’s brother and best man Patrick was our MC and welcomed guests before dinner began and the first course, a risotto with zucchini and saffron was served. Following the risotto came a pappardelle with wild boar ragout which was definitely my favourite dish and tasted even better then it did at our April tasting. For the mains, guests had a choice between a seabass fillet with thyme and lemon, millefeuille of parmesan eggplants, and beef tagliata with rosemary olive oil.

The food was plentiful with waiters coming by to offer additional servings to guests after each course. To finish off the dinner Rolands began the preparation of the wedding cake in front of guests, lopping in Adam and I to assist in its construction part way through. Once Adam and I cut the cake they served it with a shot of Limoncello and mini olive oil cakes to end off an already amazing meal.

We were blessed with the most amazing sunset the evening of our wedding!

Following the dinner it was time to dance! To get things started we kicked off the next part of the celebrations with some traditional Macedonia Oros which included a bread dance before transitioning into a ‘father-of-the-bride and bride' dance and ‘mother-of-the-groom and groom’ dance. After that it was a free for all on the dance floor and things got pretty wild the further into the night we partied.

Following the wedding day Adam and I had planned to host everyone for a ‘Hangover Pool Party Brunch’ at the Villa. Starting at eleven the majority of our guests returned to the villa for a few hours of relaxing drinks and nibbles poolside before we dispersed once again to get ready for the final wedding event - dinner at a Michelin star restaurant in Siena.

A photo of Basilica Cateriniana San Domenico in Siena Tuscany, Italy I snapped on the walk to dinner.

Our final wedding event was dinner at a historic restaurant in Siena with deep roots in Tuscan cuisine. Situated just a stone’s throw from Piazza del Campo, Ristorante Mugolone serves elevated Tuscan cuisine using locally sourced ingredients and modern approaches. Professional yet friendly service, we booked both dining rooms for our 56 person private dinner and feasted on a delicious prix fix menu of beef tartare with black truffle and pecorino cheese, brioches bread with chicken liver patè and vinsanto sauce, tagliatelle lamb ragù with coffee, risotto saffron with crunchy bacon and gorgonzola, veal check with chocolate sauce, potatoes and leeks; and cheesecake with wild strawberries for dessert. Overall the dinner was exquisite and presentation was immaculate. It was also really nice to spend an evening in Siena with everyone as it is such a beautiful city to explore (even more beautiful than Florence in my opinion) and a place with rich history that I had yet to enjoy.

Photos From Our Dinner at Ristorante Mugolone Siena

Overall our wedding in Tuscany was a dream come true. Everything was perfect and we loved every minute. I feel so blessed to have so many great people in my life willing to travel halfway around the world to see us tie the know and for all the help we received from our amazing Italian wedding planner Diana Grandi, Antonella for helping us with the paperwork, and Patricia and Martha for the amazing job with the floral decoration. We would also like to thank Casa Raia for offering to supply the red wine for our wedding, a beautiful Bevilo from their Montalcino winery. Adam and I managed to bring a few bottles of it back to Toronto which we have set aside for our future anniversaries as a memento of this wonderful journey.

MISSION TOFINO: RESTAURANTS IN TOFINO, THINGS TO DO & MORE

With love from Tofino - A fun afternoon at Cox Bay Beach

Want to hear a crazy story?

The day my friends and I travelled from Victoria to Tofino, British Columbia, the highway flooded! At the time, Vancouver Island and the lower mainland were experiencing an ‘Atmospheric River’ which was causing it to rain like crazy (AND I mean non-stop for the previous 4 days). Although rain is not uncommon for BC in November, the amount of rainfall Vancouver Island and the lower mainland received due to the Atmospheric River was record breaking, causing river levels to increase dramatically and localized flooding to occur.

Driving Route from Victoria to Tofino British Columbia

How people typically drive from Victoria to Tofino BC

Unfortunately for us, this all came to light while sitting in standstill traffic on the highway just 25 minutes outside of Victoria. We had planned to get up early, have breakfast and leave Victoria at 11AM which gave us an estimated arrival time of 3:30-4PM. However, just before 11AM the Malahat flooded and we were stuck. We sat there for 5 hours barley moving. Eventually, we learned they had to shut down the highway and had to make a pivotal choice, roll the dice and attempt another route or turn back defeated.

alternative route from Victoria to Tofino British Columbia

How we ended up having to drive from Victoria to Tofino BC

Normally, the drive from Victoria to Tofino BC will be around 4.5-5 hours long and take you up the east side of the island through Duncan, Nanaimo, and Port Albernie. But since the Malahat (the 25 km stretch of highway in the Cowichan Valley between Victoria and Duncan) was closed due to flooding we had to take the long way around. In total, we were in the car for over 13 hours. It was madness! The alternative route we ‘rolled the dice’ on took us up the west side of the island before cutting back across to Duncan, and continuing up through Nanaimo and Port Albernie to Tofino British Columbia. This route added an additional 2.5 hours to our journey and since we didn’t start moving again until 4PM, the sun had set and we had to do the whole drive in the dark! I’m talking dark, foreign, winding, one lane roads in the rain!

By the time we finally arrived to our hotel in Tofino, my friend and I had felt like we had gone through battle together. We were exhausted, relieved and elated, and the rest of our trip definitely had an underlying sense of gratitude to it. Our trip to Tofino ended up being totally worth the additional hecticness and over the next few days we took full advantage of our time there, getting up early to do some hikes, exploring beaches, checking out restaurants and discovering everything the area had to offer.

If you are planning a trip to Tofino, British Columbia make sure to check out my list of recommendations below so you too can make the most of your time in this easy going and playful Vancouver Island town.

Accomodations In Tofino - Tofino Resort and Marina.jpg

Tofino Resort and Marina offers guest safe harbor to enjoy Tofino’s purifying coastal air, abundant wild life and never ending adventure opportunities.

TOFINO RESORT AND MARINA

Our refuge after the grueling drive and stomping ground during our three night stay was none other than Tofino Resort and Marina. I first heard about this newly opened resort (opened in the summer of 2017) over a year ago. Rumor has it that the place used to be pretty run down and their restaurant was actually the dive bar in town. But looking at it now you wouldn’t know it as the 63 room hotel and marina has been completely renovated and the resort outfitted with a new designated Adventure Centre, a state-of-the-art gym, full service marina, and two new restaurants - 1909 Kitchen and The Hatch Waterfront Pub.

If you are looking to explore Tofino beyond the beaches, Tofino Resort and Marina’s Adventure Centre has you covered with an incredible selection of activities and courses like guided fishing, whale watching, wildlife tours, paddle boarding tours, and Maquinna Marine Provincial Park Tofino Hot Springs Cove tours*!

*During COVID the Tofino Hot Springs (Hot Spring Cove) closed but will be reinstated so check back for future updates!
- Good news! The Tofino Hot Springs (Hot Spring Cove) is now open to the public again! (updated Oct 5 2022)

Since opening, 1909 Kitchen and The Hatch Waterfront Pub have become local favourites. While exploring the many shops in town, several people we spoke with recommended we eat there and commented on how great their brunch was, and how beautiful their waterfront patio and dining room is with views of the mountains. I particularly loved their fresh seafood offerings, use of local seasonal forged ingredients, and well rounded menu selection. Highlights from our meal included the Outlandish Raw Oysters, Kale Salad and Wagyu Flank!

Three additional things I loved about this place were 1) it was clean, 2) my bed was so comfy and, 3) you could walk to town in 5 minutes, which meant you were close to so many of the best restaurants in Tofino including cafe’s, boutiques and more! We were also right on the water so if you wanted to come by boat (I would love to sail up the west coast one day) or gather your best mates for the ultimate pacific salmon fishing trip, it’s the perfect spot to refuel and recharge.

TOFINO RESTAURANTS

Dinner at Shelter Restaurant in Tofino BC

Located just down the street from Tofino Resort and Marina, Shelter Restaurant uses an array of fresh and local ingredients to create dishes that embody the essence of Tofino. My friends and I grabbed dinner at Shelter on our first night and were blown away by how delicious the food was at this Tofino restaurant. Highlights of our meal included the Crispy Brussel Sprouts (unlike any other I have ever tasted), the Farmhouse Chicken Burger, and Steak Frites with Chimichurri.

Hot Tip: This Tofino restaurant does get packed so make sure to call ahead and make a reservation or go early and put your name down before walking around town so you don’t have to sit outside and wait.

Restaurants In Tofino - Tocofino

The little food truck that started it all! Tacofino’s first location at the back of Live to Surf Parking Lot In Tofino BC

The little food truck that started it all, Tacofino’s first location at the back of the Live To Surf Parking Lot still continues to draw a crowd and is definitely a must when in Tofino. Serving delicious tacos (vegan and vegetarian options available), burritos and gringas, this legendary orange food truck has been a favourite for locals and visitors since 2009. The Tuna Ta Taco and Fish Taco are menu favourites as well as the Krispy Chicken Taco, but you really can’t go wrong when ordering anything on their menu.

Dinner at 1909 Kitchen in Tofino British Columbia

Even if you don’t stay at Tofino Resort and Marina, a visit to 1909 Kitchen should still be on your itinerary. Not only are the views amazing, but their cocktail and food menus are too. If you’re in Tofino in the summer they also have a great waterfront patio with views of the mountains. Many people we met also recommended this Tofino restaurant for brunch, but the dinner we enjoyed there was definitely one of the best meals we had.

Restaurants In Tofino - Quest Artisan Patisserie

We found a tiny French patisserie called Ouest Artisan Patisserie while exploring Tofino BC

We stumbled upon Ouest Artisan Patisserie one morning while exploring town and had to stop and check it out. Located in a tiny shipping container at the end of Campbell Street (220 Campbell Street) this traditional French patisserie offers freshly made croissants, breads, sandwiches, and pastries daily as well as beautiful custom wedding cakes, macarons and artisan chocolates. My friend ordered one of their croissant breakfast sandwiches to enjoy while we walked around checking out the other container vendors/stores and the amount of noise he made to show his enjoyment while eating was enough to get my own stomach growling.

Restaurants In Tofino - Rhino Cofffee

Erica and I grabbed two Americano’s from Rhino Coffee House every morning while in Tofino, British Columbia

Every morning in Tofino we would stop in at Rhino Coffee House to grab coffee and treats. Known for their fresh daily donuts and roasting their own beans, Rhino Coffee House quickly became our go to morning spot while in Tofino. Their Americanos were just the caffeine fix I needed to get the day started and I wasn’t alone. This place was always busy and you could tell that many locals like to gather outside chatting over coffee with their neighbours while walking the dog. It was cute and totally encapsulated the ‘Tofino lifestyle’.

TOFINO BEACHES & THINGS TO DO IN TOFINO

If you are looking for fun things to do in Tofino there is definitely no shortage. Known for it’s incredible surfing, visiting one of Tofino’s gorgeous beaches is definitely part of the draw. Even if you have no intention of surfing, spending the afternoon walking along the beach and watching the surfers or sunbathing is must. There are also some great local, family friendly hikes and adventures to do in the area, a few of which I did myself and am happy to recommend below!

Things To Do In Tofino - Visit Long Beach

Captured a surfer heading out for a rip at sunset on Long Beach in Tofino British Columbia

Probably the most famous beach in all of Tofino is Long Beach, where you will see lots of local surfers doing their thing. This 16km stretch of beach represents the longest beach on Vancouver Island and has a vibrant, storied, surf history. Known for being a great place to watch a dramatic winter storm or spot a gray and humpback whale during their migration, Long Beach has been attracting visitors to Tofino for decades. While in Tofino BC, the gang and I took the drive to Long Beach hoping to watch an amazing sunset and we were not disappointed. We ended up arriving 45 minutes prior to sunset and spending a lot of time walking around taking photos. The lighting was so beautiful at this time of day that I ended up taking some amazing shots of wildlife and surf. If there is one beach you can’t miss, it’s this one.

Friendly Reminder: Since Long Beach is located in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve remember that droning is not allowed and parking is strictly monitored so don’t forget to pay the fee!

Another great and popular beach to visit is Cox Bay Beach. Surrounded on one side by cliffs, a lot of people who visit Cox Bay Beach will also do the unmarked hike to Cox Bay Lookout, a 2.6 kilometer trail that under normal conditions would be considered moderate. Unfortunately for us, the recent rains had made the trail quite muddy and since the trail is not maintained, I highly recommend you wear hiking boots. The reward of course is a beautiful view of Cox Bay Beach and of the open ocean but take care getting up and down as it can get very slippery, especially going down.

Things To Do In Tofino BC - Tonquin Beach

Erica at Tonquin Beach, the first of three beachs we came across while on the Tonquin Trail.

On our first morning in Tofino, British Columbia, my friend Erica took me to do the Tonquin Trail. This short, 2 mile trail seemed to be a popular trail for locals with dogs (almost everyone we saw had one). Perhaps that’s because it’s so conveniently located close to town or maybe because the trail itself is super easy and quite beautiful. Erica and I were able to do the entire loop in about an hour and a half (we stopped a lot to take photos) and found the trail takes you along the Pacific coastline through rainforests and along rugged cliffs and boardwalks that led to get vantages points. Additionally it also connects three beaches together Tonquin Beach, Third Beach and Middle Beach, so it’s an easy way to see all three with one short walk/easy hike.

South Beach, one of the two beaches you can explore while on the Nuu-Chah-Nulth and South Beach Trail

A great family friendly trail that Erica took me on was the Nuu-Chah-Nulth and South Beach Trail. Apparently as a child Erica did this trail with her dad and to this day still has very fond memories of her experience. The 6.4 km trail is very easy with elevated boardwalks that take you through old growth forests with lush vegetation to two well know beaches, South Beach and Wikaninnish Beach. Known for its large rock formations, South Beach is a pebbled beach with rolling foamy waves. If you’re visiting during storm watching season, be careful of powerful waves and ocean spray!

My favourite beach of all the Tofino beaches was definite Mackenzie Beach. This beach is a little more sheltered than the rest thanks to its large tidal rocks. As a result, the water is calmer than the others with gentle waves suitable for skim boarding, stand up paddle boarding or small children. It also happens to be one of the only beaches we visited that was not in the National Park so I was finally able to take out my drone and ended up capturing some great footage. Beach access is available to everyone, even if you are not staying at one of the properties that line the beach. Everyone is welcome, just parking might be hard.

Unfortunately, when I was in Tofino the Tofino Hot Springs were closed and I was unable to do the tour offered through Tofino Resort and Marina’s Adventure Centre. However, the Adventure Center did mention that they are planning to reinstate the Tofino Hot Springs tour once the Ahousaht First Nation and the Hesquiaht First Nation grant access to Hot Spring Cove again (access was restricted due to concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 to the Hesquiaht First Nation village in Hot Springs Cove). This was definitely something I was looking forward to doing while in Tofino BC but alas, I understand the reasons why. Regardless, I recommend checking back for updates on whether it’s been reopened because it’s something I totally plan on doing the next time I’m in Tofino, British Columbia.

Check out this Tofino map which shows where all the above recommendations are in relation to the Tofino Resort and Marina!

GETTING FROM VICTORIA TO TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Victoria to Tofino - Driving

The easiest way to get around the island is definitely to drive and under normal conditions the 317.3 km drive from Victoria to Tofino British Columbia should take you under 5 hours to complete if you don’t stop.

Alternatively, there is a ferry that you can take part way from Victoria to Swarts Bay terminal, but it doesn’t save you time or get you far enough to make a substantial dent so it’s not really a good option.

If you don’t have a car you can also take the Tofino Bus offered by the Tofino Bus Company that services both north bound and south bound daily. Fare for adults start at $102.83 whereas youths between 12-17 are $72 and Children 2-11 are $52. The bus does pick up from various points around Victoria including the Victoria main bus depot (departure is at 9:45AM) so check their website to see what the closest pick up point to you is. There are also four main drop off locations in Tofino so be sure to pick the one closest to where you are staying.

GETTING FROM VANCOUVER TO TOFINO, BRITISH COLUMBIA

Getting from Vancouver to Tofino isn’t hard, it just takes some preparation. There are flights offered by Pacific Coastal Airlines and Harbour Air Sea Planes that can take you right from Vancouver to Tofino in 45 minutes. Additionally you can do a ‘drive and fly’ combo by flying from Vancouver to Victoria, Nanaimo or Comox and drive the rest of the way.

If you don’t feel like flying, BC Ferries also offers numerous ferries from Vancouver to Vancouver Island. Your three options for taking the ferry include:

  1. Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay: Horseshoe Bay terminal is located just north of Vancouver and arrives to Nanaimo’s Departure Bay in just under 2 hours.

  2. Tsawwassen to Duke Point:  Located just south of Vancouver close to the USA border, the Tsawwassen terminal ferry takes you to Duke Point terminal, about 15 minutes south of Nanaimo, in approximately 2.5 hours.

  3. Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay:  Leaving from the same mainland terminal as above, the Swartz Bay terminal ferry takes approximately 2 hours and drops you off 30 minutes north of Victoria.

For more information visit https://www.bcferries.com

Further, if you don’t have a car and don’t want to fly from Vancouver to Tofino, you can also take the ferry to Vancouver Island and then jump on the Tofino Bus. I would just do the extra research to make sure you line up the timing correctly so you don’t get stuck mid transit.

Well there you have it! Another great trip in the books for me and another slew of recommendations for you! If you are heading to Tofino soon I hope you have a great trip and feel free to come back and share your recommendations with me too! I’m always looking for an excuse to go back! Until then, safe travels!

A big thank you to Tofino Resort and Marina for hosting us and partnering with me on this post. As always, all opinions remain my own!

WHAT'S NEW IN VEGAS: AN UPDATED VEGAS 2.0 TRAVEL GUIDE

Strolling through the Venetian Resort Las Vegas

I could hardly contain my childish excitement as we glided through the air taking in the view of the Las Vegas Strip. Although it had only been two years since I attended my friends bachelorette in Vegas, there were so many activities I still needed to cross off my bucket list and so many recently opened restaurants I was itching to try. It was good to be back and now, soaring over the Vegas Strip in a helicopter, soaking up its buzzing energy from an unbelievable vantage point, I was hit with a title wave of elation that literally made me laugh aloud. Viva Las Vegas, baby!

This time around I wasn’t attending a bachelorette. Instead, I was with a great group of friends who enjoyed eating and trying new things. Some of us had been to Vegas before while others were experiencing it for the first time. Although much of what you expect from a Vegas vacation remains available, the city is also rolling out the red carpet with many new experiences for visitors to try. Tons of restaurants have recently opened and there’s even a new hotel on the strip! I was on a mission! So for five and a half days we dined, drank and explored. I crossed so many items off my Vegas bucket list and have so many new recommendations to share because it’s Vegas 2.0 and it’s better than ever!

The recently opened Casa Playa at The Wynn Las Vegas!

WHAT’S NEW IN VEGAS

My meal at The Wynn Las Vegas’ newest Mexican costal restaurant, Casa Playa, was sensational. Chef Sarah Thompson’s ceviche, aguachile, and seafood platters are all sustainably sourced from Mexico’s Pacific coastline. The selection of carne is also hard to pass on with Wagyu tacos and suckling pig carnitas being major highlights, both served alongside fresh house-made corn tortillas. Trying one of their cocktails is also a must as Wynn’s expert mixologist Mariena Mercer Boarini has curated a collection of delicious cocktails using only the best spirits and produce of Mexico. As soon as I walked into the place I knew it was something to get excited about. The ambiance was beautiful, the staff were so friendly, and the drinks and seafood dishes that followed were exceptional. I already have plans to come back on my next trip to Las Vegas.

Join the party and feast on Julian Serrano’s revamped menu of exquisite Spanish fare at Julian Serrano Tapas located in Aria. Two-time recipient of the James Beard Award and Madrid native, Chef Julian Serrano shares his interpretations of his native Spanish fare with delectable small plates with big flavours like ‘Pulpo a la Gallega’, an octopus dish with potatoes and Spanish paprika, and Shisihito Peppers dressed with lemon and sea salt. If you’re a big paella fan like me, I recommend persuading a friend or two to tag team one of their delicious paellas as well. And don’t forget to save room for dessert! We did a trio of their orange blossom ‘Crema Catalana’, homemade Churros in a spicy hot chocolate, and Monchego cheese cake, that we devoured. Top it all off with their refreshing house made Sangria that takes 3 days to create, and you have a great meal to get you started on a night out in Las Vegas.

A slice of Canada has found its way to Las Vegas with one of the world’s most celebrated Greek seafood restaurants opening its 7th location in The Venetian Resort Las Vegas. Born in Montreal, Estiatorio Milos serves an à la carte menu of dishes family style, in a setting inspired by Greek Cycladic landscapes and the iconic Milos fresh fish market. Open for lunch and dinner, Milos is perfect for large groups, date nights, celebrations, and up scale family dinners. While in Vegas I had a chance to try their prix fixe lunch menu for $38 which is a great option if you are going out as a large group and want to keep it simple. Menu favourites included the Big Eye ‘Tuna Tartare’ with micro basil, Serrano chile and orange, and ‘Astako Makaronada’ a Deep Sea Bay of Fundy lobster pasta, Athenian style.

If you are a fan of celebrity chef David Chang, Majordomo Meat & Fish opened at The Palazzo right before the pandemic which, in my opinion, means it’s practically brand new! The restaurant features a large main dining room, a nice bar area with additional seating, and a secret karaoke room which is available to groups after dinner for singing and cocktails. My friends and I had dinner here and ordered a la carte to share family style. Big hits include the ‘Bing Bread’, ‘Shaved Fois Gras’ with pear butter and ricotta, ‘Crispy Cauliflower Shawarma’ with tahini, cherry tomatoes and pomegranate, and Shrimp Crispy Rice with spicy salt, gochujang and cilantro. For an entertaining table side experience order the ‘The Major Doughnut’ for dessert! It’s essentially pan fried Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in a banana flambé with vanilla ice cream and caramel whip. It’s delicious and the best dessert I had in Vegas!

Resort World Las Vegas - the first integrated resort to be built on the Las Vegas Strip in over a decade

The first integrated resort to be built on the Las Vegas strip in over a decade has finally open its doors to the public! Resort World Las Vegas is an urban contemporary resort that blends technology, luxury with the long standing traditions and level of hospitality associated with the Resort World brand. Situated on the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, adjacent to the Fashion Show Mall and Las Vegas Convention Center, Resort World Las Vegas is comprised of three hotel properties - Las Vegas Hilton, Conrad Las Vegas and Crockfords Las Vegas. The hotel casino floor boast 117,000 square feet of both slots and table games like blackjack, craps, and roulette, but the real ‘wow factor’ can be found on the 66th floor at their more intimate Sky Casino. Resort World also has the largest pool complex on the strip with seven stunning pools to choose from, an Awana Spa that offers a variety of treatments inspired by European and Eastern rituals to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul, as well as over 70,000 square feet of curated designer boutiques to help you indulge in some retail therapy. Additionally, expect to see artists like Katy Perry, Celine Dion, and Luke Bryan performing at Resorts World Theatre, a multi level concert and entertainment venue with a 5,000 person capacity that is outfitted to host a myriad of affairs from A-List concerts to conventions. Lastly, there are over 40 globally inspired food and beverage experiences to explore at Resorts World Las Vegas, more than any other destination on the Strip.

Enjoyed my lychee cocktail ‘Fuhy Haiku’ from Fuhu Las Vegas outside at Ayu Dayclub

I had a chance to experience Resort World Las Vegas a few times during my latest trip to Las Vegas and was even invited to try a few bites from one of their signature restaurants FUHU, a contemporary Asian inspired restaurant who’s menu features a wide variety of dished including seafood, steak and sushi, plus specialty cocktails and sake. Everything I tasted was delicious including their signature lychee cocktail ‘Fuhu Haiku’, duck fried rice and ‘Fuhu Fried Chicken’ with chile glaze and scallions. Next time I am back in Las Vegas I will for sure be organizing a proper sit down dinner here so I can try the rest of the menu.

DJ Snake at Zouk Nightclub, Resort World Las Vegas

One of the first events I attended while in Las Vegas was to see DJ Snake perform at Resort World Las Vegas’s club, Zouk Nightclub. Attached to Ayu Dayclub - a Bali inspired outdoor oasis - Zouk Nightclub is a massive venue spanning over 26,000 square feet with the capacity to hold over 2,100 people. The club features a large dance floor surrounded by go-go dancers and booth seating. The main stage, although elevated didn’t feel impersonal which I think allowed the crowd to really connect with the DJ and music. Upscale nightclub attire is required to enter so come dressed to impress!

Helicopter Tour Las Vegas - Maverick Helicopter Soheila_.jpg

If you don’t get a photo, did it really happen? Me at Maverick Helicopter in Las Vegas ready to take flight!

FUN GROUP & FAMILY ACTIVITIES IN LAS VEGAS

One of the biggest highlights of my trip was definitely doing an afternoon helicopter tour of the Vegas Strip with Maverick Helicopters. I have been in a helicopter before but for some reason it still fills me with childish excitement ever single time I take flight in one, and this was no different. The ride was a total of 15 minutes long and took us soaring above the strip giving way to incredible views of Vegas. It was such a fun experience and I got a thrill out of seeing iconic landmarks like Paris Paris’s Eiffel Tower, Bellagio, Wynn and the Venetian from way up high.

HOT TIP: Sit on the pilot’s side of the helicopter for the best views! The tour starts at $149 USD and shuttle service to the Las Vegas Strip Terminal, where you would be meet your pilot, is available.

Dinner at the Wynn is always a good idea and their restaurant Lakeside is about as amazing of a setting as it gets in Las Vegas. Situated on the edge of the Lake of Dreams, you aren’t just getting an upscale dining experience, you’re also getting a beautiful show full of characters and music! The girls and I lucked out with a great table on the patio that provided us a prime location to view the show all while feasting on one delicious dish after the next. Highlights of this meal definitely include everything from the ‘Raw & Chilled’ section of their menu as well as the Atlantic Diver Scallops in a cauliflower velouté, fennel chutney, grapefruit, and roasted chicken jus. For dessert, ‘Pretty In Pink’ and ‘Shooting Star’ both rose to the top as table favourites for presentation and taste. Although a great restaurant for large groups, entertaining clients or splurging on an upscale family dining experiences, children under 5 are not allowed in the restaurant and there is a dress code. So come dressed to the nines and ready for an unforgettable night!

Our Lakeside Las Vegas view!

An absolute must when in Las Vegas is going to a Cirque Du Soleil show. During this trip I saw 2 Cirque shows, Mystère at Treasure Island and ‘O’ at Bellagio Hotel & Casino, and both were spectacular! Mystère is an original Cirque Du Soleil production that combines high-energy acrobatics to the thunderous rhythms of the Taiko drums, and ‘O” is a theatrical performance that combines world-class acrobats, synchronized swimmers, and divers with enchanting characters. Both shows are around 90 minutes and tickets are available Wednesday through Sunday for 7:00PM and 9:30PM showings. Tickets vary in price depending on which show you choose and where you want to, sit but they start at $75-80 USD. Although I do consider this a group or family friendly activity, I would be doing you a disservice if I did not also mention that guests under 18 must be accompanied by an adult and children under the age of 5 are not permitted in the theatre.

So there you have it, another trip to Vegas in the books and a lifetime of memories to go home with. If you haven’t already I also recommend you check out the guide I did after I organized my friends Bachelorette in Vegas. It’s also full of great Las Vegas restaurant recommendations and fun activities to do including the best Vegas pool party I have ever been to. If you end up doing any of the activities I shared above or dine at any of the restaurants I recommended, I would love to hear about your experience and invite you to share about it below! Until next time!
